Why Wooden Gable Vents are Better Than the Others

You have thought about adding gable vents to the house for a long time, but it seems like vinyl and wood are your only real options.  Vinyl is inexpensive, but it tends to really look cheap, and you’ve been told that the material won’t last as long in the weather.  However, you aren’t sure about wooden gable vents, either.  While not expensive to install, they do tend to be pricier than vinyl, and you don’t see how they could really be that much better in terms of material, durability, and longevity.  Why are wood gable vents better than others?

When considering if you should purchase a wood gable vent, consider the style of your home first.  Stand back at the street level and eye your home.  The style of the home is the first impression others get of it, too.  If you use plastics or other faux wood gables, chances are good that they will degrade the value of the home.  Some products are made to look like real wood, but in actuality they do not provide the same character traits that are important.  Standing there, you will be able to tell than they are not wooden gable vents and to many that matters.

If your home is lacking in character, adding a wood gable vent or two can add depth and personality to the home.  A variety of shapes can be purchased, each with its own trim to match your home or to make a statement of its own.  Wood offers traditional charm that other products simply can not match.  Consider an arched gable vent, for example, with its elegant curves.  It definitely sets the tone for the home.

Another reason to consider wood is longevity.  Depending on what type of wood you purchase, you will get a long life out of it.  A good option is cedar gable vents.  Unlike plastics or vinyl, they will weather well, without warping.  Discolorations are easily remedied.  Many vinyl need to be replaced after a short amount of time due either to damage or to discoloration.  Wood is resistant and durable in even very harsh winters and humid summers.  Cedar gable vents will withstand insects and rotting better than any other wood product on the market.

While non wood gable vents are available on the market, many people striving to provide the finishing details on their home will not use anything but authentic wood to complete it.  The character and beauty are worth paying slightly more for.
